MEDFORD—Circuit Court Judge Sara Collins officially filed her candidacy last week with the Secretary of State to retain her position on the Jackson County Circuit Court, Position 8, in Oregon’s 1st Judicial District. Judge Collins was appointed to the Court on June 12 of this year and officially sworn into office on July 10.

“Serving as judge in my home community of Southern Oregon is an honor and an opportunity. I am focused on serving our county and state in this new role to the best of my ability,” said Judge Collins, who was born and raised in Medford and is now raising her family here. “I care deeply about creating a more thoughtful, safe, and thriving community and so much of that is tightly knit to an honorable and trustworthy judicial system.”

Judge Collins grew up in Jackson County and attended South Medford High School before earning her bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Oregon. After college, she spent a year in Costa Rica teaching English to elementary-aged children. Upon her return to the United States, Sara attended the University of Oregon School of Law, graduating in 2001.

She then completed a judicial clerkship in Alaska where she discovered her true passion for trial law and worked as a prosecutor. In 2004, Sara returned home to Oregon, where she dedicated 11 years as a public defender working in the Lane County Public Defender’s office and Southern Oregon Public Defender, Inc., and worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the Oregon Department of Justice Child Advocacy Section.

In 2016, she transitioned to private practice, and in 2018 became a founding partner of Collins Rowan, LLP where she represented clients in juvenile, family law, and criminal cases. She worked here until her appointment to the Jackson County Circuit Court in June of 2023.

Continuing her commitment to her community and public service, Sara has volunteered on the board of directors of La Clinica for the last six years. La Clinica is a medical nonprofit in Jackson County committed to providing culturally appropriate, accessible, quality healthcare to Jackson County’s diverse population. Sara also served as a volunteer pro tem judge from 2015 to 2018 and on the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar’s Juvenile Law Section.

“Each person who steps into my courtroom will know their voices are heard, they are equal under the eyes of the law, and they will have a fair and impartial judge making decisions. I will serve the communities of Jackson County, and our state, with honesty, integrity, fairness, and a commitment to uphold the rule of law.”
